I’m going to be honest with you, I don’t think Julia is human. Not that I know that much about her. Really, not too many people do. Somewhat new to the scene she seems to lay low, keeping to herself. Sometimes, late at night, you can see her dart across the back yards of the subdivision out to the frog ponds on the boundaries of the city lights. There under the moonlight, from under the water you can hear her warbling a tune out across the marshy fields and into the backyards of those still sleeping. On some nights her melancholy melodies are mild and smooth, uplifting. Other nights she strikes out in a seasick vibrato, pulling down a sense of distress from the sycamores surrounding her. No sir, I have no proof, but I don’t think Julia is human.
At least that’s our take on the Julia Analog Chorus/Vibrato from Walrus Audio, a pedal that seemingly has more background than what the picture reveals on the front as the tagline of the description on the website reveals when they state, “The Julia comes in a deep lavender colored enclosure with surf green ink, featuring original artwork of the water mystery, Julia revealing the tip of her hand telling more of her true story.” True story? Here’s what we do know:
The Julia is a fully analog, feature-rich chorus/vibrato packed with a wide array of tonal landscapes to put your playing in any mood. The controls like Lag, Dry-Chorus-Vibrato Blend, and selectable analog LFO wave shapes. These all give you the ability to dial in all types of classic and unique chorus/vibrato sounds with some settings giving a familiar feel while others not so traditional.
A special feature of the Julia is the Lag control. The Lag knob lets you set the center delay time that the LFO effect modulates from. From smooth and tight modulation at lower settings, to warbling detune at maximum, the Lag knob adds a new dimension to the traditional Chorus/Vibrato landscape.
While most chorus/vibrato pedals offer a toggle to go between the two effects, we’ve provided a knob to blend between Dry, Chorus, into Vibrato (labeled d-c-v on the pedal). The Dry-Chorus-Vibrato Blend changes the ratio of dry to wet signal sent to the output. At minimum, you will hear no effect. Set it to noon for equal parts dry and wet – the traditional chorus setting. Set it to maximum for 100% wet – the traditional vibrato setting. Explore the ground between minimum and noon for adding slight amounts of movement to your dry signal (also making the Julia great on bass guitar). Explore the ground between noon and maximum for all sorts of unheard chorus/vibrato combinations.
I love the fact that Walrus Audio is having fun with their pedals – maybe more fun than anyone else right now.
